Using the Speech to Text Tool

If you have students who struggle to type, but can verbally communicate, you can turn on a Student Tool in their assignments so that they can speak their answers!!! They'll use their computer's audio device to provide the responses to questions.

The Speech to Text tool is found on the last screen of creating an Assignment, along with the other Student Tools:

With that set, students will see a microphone icon next to the input rectangle when they click on one of these items:

  • Open Answer questions
  • Short Answer questions
  • Student text boxes

Here's an example of a Short Answer item with this option:

Students can then type their answers as before, or click the microphone icon.

When students click the microphone icon, they'll see a transcription box open.

Students should begin speaking immediately. Their words will appear in the box after a slight delay.

When they've finished their answer, they should click the "Use Transcription" button to copy their spoken words into their answer. The contents of the transcription box will be copied to wherever the text cursor had been placed, so if they wish to add to their answer, they can move the cursor to the end and click the microphone icon again.
