How Do I Use the Match Table Grid Tool?

A Match Table Grid question presents students with a table. The rows in the tables represent questions and the columns represent possible answers. Each cell in the table represents a “Match” between the corresponding row and column. It’s a very efficient way to ask a series of multiple choice or multi-select questions with the same possible answers.

To add this feature to a TeacherMade activity, start by drawing a box where you want the item type to be on the assignment and then choosing, “Match Table Grid:”

This pop up will appear:

You will need to add labels to both the header column for answer options and to the leftmost row for question prompts.

You can add more columns or rows by selecting the “+” signs. You can add up to 20 columns and 20 rows to make whatever size Match Table Grid you need! You can also delete a column or row by selecting the, “x.”

Once you’ve entered the column and row labels, select the cells that represent a “match” or correct answer. Each cell will contain a “radio” button if you’re only allowing one correct answer per row (see the above example). If you choose “Can have multiple correct answers per row,” each cell will instead contain a checkbox, as in the example below.

When you’ve got all of your row and column labels filled in and your answer key set, click “Save.”

Clicking “Save” will return you to the activity view, where you may need to adjust the size of the Match Table Grid item to display all of the columns and rows. If it’s too large, try editing the item and reducing the font size, then resizing the box. It’s a good idea to use the Preview button in the editor to make sure everything displays well and that your answer key is set up the way you want.

Students will see a grid that looks like this, prompting them to select their matches. The student must answer all the questions correctly to receive the assigned points.

This question type can be used in so many activities for matching, categorization or even surveys. Time to get creative with Match Table Grid!
